When I met the airman he had been sitting in Rene’s tattoo chair comfortably for about an hour. He told me a bit about himself and that he was an Air Force military policeman stationed at Maxwell Air Force base in Montgomery, Alabama. He’d heard about Rene through a friend on facebook and anxiously wanted to get his current tattoo covered up with much better artwork.

Rene designed, stenciled, prepped and did the Zeus cover up tattoo an 8 hour session. The tattoo artist from Chile meticulously covered the original tattoo with a new sleeve tattoo featuring his unique artist’s impression of Zeus. I liked the choice. The portrait of Zeus was fierce and authoritative. Just like military policeman are expected to be among their warrior constituents.

After a almost eight hours of nonstop tattooing the airman left happy with his new military tattoo…and it’s just remarkable. You can see the fine lines in the greek god’s beard. The bold shades of black that define Zeus’ face seemingly make him look alive. The gray and white ink used with black to create piercing eyes… You almost won’t notice this is a grey, black, and white tattoo and not just blackwork. Not being a tattoo artist myself it amazes me how these guys are able to remake or cover up original artwork. Most times there is zero trace of the previous tattoo.
