Listen To your body artist.

Professional tattoo artists should always give instructions to new customers on tattoo care. Ours will remind their previous customers. Listen to them and don’t deviate but if you’re a veteran with a new artist don’t be alarmed if your artist gives you a slightly different version of care. This is OK as they are experts and their methods have been tested over the years. Just don’t ad-lib your own techniques. There are many aftercare techniques that may seem harmless but will in fact degrade or alter the quality of the artwork.

Don’t remove the bandage too early.

Once done our tattoo artists will clean and sterilize the tattooed area, apply anti-bacteria ointment, and cover the ink with a dressing. Although completely covered a lot of times people don’t want to resist the temptation to admire their new tattoo early. Remember the tattoo is also an abrasion when first finished. The bandage protects you from airborne bacteria that could invade your body through the freshly minted tattoo. Dirt, silt, other other particles embedding in your skin could cause scar tissue or unattractive bumps. Give your tattoo a minimum of one hour before removing the bandage and make no exceptions here. We use a combination of breathable bandages and plastic wrap to both allow the tattoo to breathe and protect against particles invading your new piece.

Our artists suggest a minimum of at least one hour to leave your arm in the bandage but individual pieces may vary on the maximum amount of time. After your tattoo has begun healing you’ll need to remove the dressing as oxygen is absolutely critical for your artwork to heal correctly. Our artists tend to agree that you should not keep plastic wrap on the arm more than one hour. To remove it soak the inked area in warm water to remove the bandage without it sticking to your skin. Afterwards discard the used dressing and plastic wrap.

After removing the bandage gently wash the tattoo with warm water and a mild unscented soap.

Liquid soap antibacterial soap is a good idea. Dip your hands into the warm water and use your cleaned hands gently rub away traces of blood and leaked ink. You want to apply water indirectly via this method instead of running a faucet. For some a faucet with mild water pressure may be fine but since pressure varies and our artists have no idea of the strength of your running water we recommend this. Low pressure shower heads are fine for large large tattoos.

Don’t wipe the inked areas dry. Pat the tattoo dry with a soft towel or dressing. Because an abrasion is essentially scraped upper layers of skin wiping the area could cause irritation to the tattoo. Afterwards leave the tattoo uncovered for 20 minutes to an hour. This will allow the tattoo to breathe and give the any excess moisture time to dissipate.

After drying always apply a non-scented, water-based anti-bacterial ointment

IMG_20170821_172350_057When tattooed areas lose moisture the skin can feel dry and little tight. You should then cover it with a light layer of antibacterial ointment. DO NOT USE PETROLEUM BASED PRODUCTS SUCH AS VASELINE. Petroleum products clog pores and can cause distasteful outbreaks on the tattoo. Petroleum based also draw the ink from the healing skin which will fade or smear your tattoo. Repeat this process for 3 days or until the tattoo starts to peel. When it does you can begin applying fragrance free lotion. We recommend using H2Ocean which is a foam lather sold here at Iron Palm Tattoos or in our online shop.

Religiously wash and moisturize your tattoo at least three times a day until the scab is gone.

If the tattoo is on your hand, wrist, foot, or an area that comes in contact with foreign surfaces often. The tattoo may scab but that’s OK. Continue to washing your art with anti-bacterial soap and warm water until it is fully healed. This normally takes anywhere from 2 to 6 six weeks depending on the size of the tattoo. Eating healthy and getting the recommended daily allowance of vitamins also promotes quick and healthy healing.Arabic Script Tattoo just finished by Sketchmo. Call 404-973-7828

Tattoo Don’ts:

  • As your tattoo heals it will begin to scab. This is normal, and the scabs should be allowed to dry out and fall off by themselves. Do not remove the scabs yourself. This usually leads to lighter spots on your tattoo which can be unattractive.
Always wash your hands thoroughly before attending to your tattoo so that it doesn’t become infected.
  • New tattoos are sometimes itchy while scabbing or if the area becomes dry. We recommend relieving the itchiness by staying hydrated and keeping it moisturized with a non-petroleum based antibacterial ointment.
  • Do not over-soak the tattoo. Too much water can draw ink out of the artwork.
  • Do not swimming in a pool. Swimming pools can carry bacteria, particles, and chemicals that will affect the ink of your healing tattoo even if not they are properly maintained.
  • Take short baths and showers.Five to seven minutes maximum.
  • Keep your new tattoo out of direct sunlight. Sunlight will bleach the tattoo and because its healing the area can sunburn and blister quicker than others. If you are in the sun make sure to cover the artwork with at least a sunblock rated at SPF 30.
  • Try not to exercise the affected area. When you work out muscle growth or fat loss can cause the skin to stretch or shrink which will elongate healing times.
